Upgrade of Fynbos Dam in Majik Forest restarts soon

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is busy appointing a new contractor to complete the upgrade at Fynbos Dam in Majik Forest, Bellville. Work resumes in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2025.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is investing about R5,5 million into this upgrade project, which aims to assist water flow from the dam through the spillway.

The scope of work includes:

• Replacing the existing concrete overflow sill with a new apron and concrete sill, and constructing new battered training walls.
• Constructing a new stepped spillway discharge channel and lining the channel with reno-mattresses and gabions.
• Using gabions to protect the basin from erosion.

Located in the Majik Forest Conservation Area, Fynbos Dam forms part of Cape Town’s stormwater infrastructure assets maintained by the Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) Branch.

The dam is routinely inspected for safety, which identified the need for capital works upgrades to its severely eroded spillway structure. Unfortunately due to contractual disputes, work which had already begun was suspended in November 2024, causing delays to project completion.

‘Residents have been supportive by being patient while the appointment of the new contractor is being finalised, and we want to thank them for that. Going forward if all goes according to plan, it is anticipated that work on site will soon resume to restore the safety and integrity of this valued infrastructure,’ said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
